Laser skin treatments promote skin remodeling for firmer, smoother, healthier-looking skin. November is celebrated as National Healthy Skin Month, and our medical spa is highlighting what laser technology can do for your skin concerns. Whether you struggle with signs of aging or facial scarring, The Plastic Surgery Center can help you improve your complexion with a customized treatment plan and skin analysis.
How Lasers Improve Your Skin Health
Sun exposure and your environment, genes, and lifestyle habits affect the health and appearance of your skin. Too much time in the sun increases skin discoloration with sunspots and freckles and worsens lines and wrinkles, causing a weathered or leathery appearance. Acne, scarring, loose skin, rosacea, melasma, and many other skin concerns can damage your tissues and affect your complexion.
Laser skin treatments use different technologies and energies to target specific skin structures. These non-surgical treatments refresh the skin and target specific concerns, such as skin discoloration (sunspots, brown birthmarks, uneven tone), wrinkles, unsightly veins, and sagging skin. Lasers can restore a youthful look by promoting skin remodeling with new collagen. Collagen prevents your skin from sagging and provides that youthful “plump” appearance, but collagen production decreases starting in your mid-20s. Laser treatment jumpstarts collagen. The precise damage to skin layers pushes your body to heal the area with new collagen and growth factors that strengthen the skin for an even skin tone and texture.
Some laser technologies target pigment, while others make selective channels for your body to fill in with new tissue and collagen. Our medical staff will evaluate your skin and identify the type of laser to address your cosmetic concerns.
Photorejuvenation with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment
IPL treatment corrects photoaging (sun damage), birthmarks, benign brown pigments, broken capillaries, port wine stains, rosacea, and other pigmentation concerns. The non-invasive technology works for all ages and is customized to your skin type. IPL targets red or brown pigments to shrink and raise them to the surface, where they slough off about a week after the laser treatment.
Laser Skin Resurfacing with Ablative and Non-Ablative Lasers
Ablative lasers use intense light wavelengths to remove the outer skin layer to address aging or damaged skin. Non-ablative lasers are “fractionate,” meaning they form tiny columns in the skin using heat energy that promotes wound healing without needing to remove layers of skin. Non-ablative laser treatments work best for wrinkle reduction, while ablative lasers offer more aggressive treatment for pitted scars and deeper skin damage. Ablative laser treatment offers faster results but requires a longer recovery.
Non-ablative lasers can improve skin texture and tone with little downtime, but most patients require multiple treatment sessions to reach their desired results.
The Plastic Surgery Center uses ResurFX™ M22, a fractionated non-ablative laser technology featuring CoolScan™. This laser treatment requires just one pass over the treated area, reducing discomfort. PalomarLux 1450 fractional laser is another non-ablative option at our Granite Bay and Sacramento offices. This technology targets the middle layer of skin (dermis) with infrared light to stimulate newer, healthy skin tissue and collagen remodeling. Our plastic surgeons and medical spa also offer skin renewal with Functional Aspiration Controlled Electrothermal Stimulation (FACES™), vacuum, and bipolar radiofrequency to heat deep tissues for smoother, more youthful skin.
