Have you ever wondered if you could get rid of fat without an invasive surgical procedure?
Well the answer is …. YES, you can! CoolSculpting was a genius discovery sparked by curiosity from a study that noted children who ate popsicles would develop dimples where they held the popsicle for prolonged periods of time.
The Plastic Surgery Center believes in giving our patients a choice in cosmetic treatment. We are pleased to offer CoolSculpting to patients in Sacramento and the surrounding area who want to eliminate unwanted body fat without surgery.
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a process that permanently destroys fat cells by freezing them at a certain temperature for a specific time frame. CoolSculpting, also known as apoptosis, is a safe and effective treatment for subcutaneous fat (that is the pinchable fat in an area of the body).
Candidates for CoolSculpting
Individuals who have pinchable areas in the back, flanks (also known as love handles), abdomen and thighs. Areas where the fat is not pinchable and the area is firm, the fat may be deeper and will not respond to CoolSculpting. People who want to remove small areas of fat with little to no downtime are good candidates.
Pregnant or nursing women and individuals should not do CoolSculpting and other medical conditions may exclude some people from receiving treatment. CoolSculpting is not a replacement for surgical liposuction.
The Benefits of CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting offers many benefits over surgical body contouring procedures like liposuction, including:
- No needles and incisions
- No anesthesia needed
- No scarring
- Little to no downtime
- Minor and temporary side effects
- Fewer risks of complications
CoolSculpting is a great option to remove fat from the abdomen, back, bra-strap area, inner or outer thighs, buttocks, knees and submental area (underneath the chin). Candidacy for CoolSculpting is determined on a case-by-case basis. The Plastic Surgery Center screens each individual patient to determine whether CoolSculpting is right for their body contouring needs and goals.
Treatment Details
CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to target fat cells in the treatment area without harming the surrounding skin and tissue. The fat cells crystallize (i.e., freeze) and then die. The body naturally processes and eliminates the dead fat cells. While CoolSculpting is not painful, patients may feel intense cold and a slight pinching sensation. This is well-tolerated by most patients; patients are free to read, work on a tablet or take a nap during treatment.
To begin, a protective gel is applied to the treatment area. The fatty bulges are positioned between two handpieces that will deliver the controlled cooling. The handpieces will remain over the selected area until the fat cells reach freezing temperature. There is no downtime with CoolSculpting; patients can return to work and resume all normal activities immediately after treatment. Minor side effects include swelling, redness and itching, but these are temporary and should subside within a few days.
Most patients need more than one treatment session to achieve their desired results. Our team can create an individualized treatment plan for you upon discussing your specific needs and goals.
CoolSculpting Results
Results will vary from person to person. Patients may begin to see results as soon as three weeks after treatment, once the body has eliminated the targeted fat cells. The final results may take several months to become visible. The effects of CoolSculpting are considered to be permanent. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they cannot regenerate. However, it is recommended that patients maintain a healthy and stable weight to maintain their slimmer physique. Most people will need 2 treatment sessions to obtain an ideal result.
CoolSculpting FAQs
Is CoolSculpting a permanent solution?
Fat cells that are targeted by the CoolSculpting procedure freeze and are absorbed by the body over a period of weeks or months. These cells do not grow back, although poor dietary and lifestyle habits are likely to create new ones as your body stores excess calories. Because the CoolSculpting procedure targets inches, not weight, targeted areas should retain their new, slimmed-down shape even when moderate weight gain occurs.
How much fat will be eliminated?
CoolSculpting is ideal for the “pinchable” areas of fat that you have on your body. Deeper body fat cannot be reached by the CoolSculpting process. Many patients at The Plastic Surgery Center in Sacramento report a fat reduction of approximately 25 percent per treatment in the targeted areas. Although a single treatment will yield these remarkable results, patients often choose one or more follow-up procedures to improve the areas by an additional 20 to 25 percent each session.
How quickly does CoolSculpting work?
The procedure itself is simple and convenient, requiring less than an hour. The change in your fat cells takes longer. Once the “pinchable” area of fat is frozen, these newly crystalized cells essentially die. Your body will ultimately identify these dead cells and slowly eliminate them in a process that may take two to four months.
This is actually one of the advantages CoolSculpting has over other procedures, such as liposuction. The gradual reduction of fat in targeted areas allows your skin to progressively shrink to cover your new profile. And it also allows time for your body to produce more collagen, a process that is triggered by CoolSculpting’s freezing. It is collagen that will add firmness and flexibility to your skin, providing your new profile with a youthful look and feel.
Are there side effects?
Here is another example of the benefits of CoolSculpting in comparison with other options, especially surgical procedures. CoolSculpting is a simple and safe procedure that is performed in our office. It requires no special planning: no need to clear your work schedule or arrange for someone to drive you home. There’s no anesthesia needed, as you will feel only minor tingling or numbness as the CoolSculpting instrument treats one of your “pinchable” pockets of fat. Patients describe the feeling as similar to the application of an ice pack.
Once the cells have been frozen, the process becomes positively calming: the targeted areas are massaged to slowly bring the treated areas up to body temperature. When you leave the office, the only clues that you’ve just had a CoolSculpting procedure will be a slightly flushed appearance of the skin, which will last only an hour — and the air of confidence you’ll project to the world, which may be permanent!
