With advances in cosmetic medicine, there are more treatment options than ever to reduce the appearance of a “double chin” caused by excess fat underneath the chin. Using surgical or non-surgical methods, the team at The Plastic Surgery Center can create a more defined jawline for an overall more attractive, youthful and fit appearance. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the treatment options.
Kybella
Kybella is a cosmetic injectable that breaks down fat cells underneath the chin to reduce or eliminate a double chin. The short, non-surgical procedure generally takes about 15 minutes to complete and is not painful. Although patients tend to have some swelling for a few days, recovery downtime is limited. Several treatment sessions, spaced about four weeks apart, generally produce the best result.
CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting is another non-surgical treatment that can safely reduce fat under the chin to create a more defined jawline. CoolSculpting works by exposing the unwanted fat to controlled cooling. The fat cells freeze and die, and the body naturally eliminates the dead cells. CoolSculpting is performed in our office, and a treatment session usually takes less than an hour. Like Kybella, there may be minor side effects after treatment but there is no significant downtime. Depending on the specific case, patients may require more than one treatment session to achieve their ideal outcome.
Liposuction
The primary surgical option for a double chin is liposuction. Through a small incision, the surgeon moves a slender, hollow tube back and forth to break up unwanted fat; then, the fat is suctioned out of the body. The outpatient procedure requires slightly more downtime than Kybella and CoolSculpting, and swelling and bruising can last for one to two weeks, but the results tend to be more dramatic. Only one procedure is needed to see results.
Neck Lift
If excess skin and fat are giving the area under the chin a heavy look, neck lift may be a suitable option. Neck lift eliminates excess fat and skin for a smoother and more youthful contour. Like liposuction, neck lift is an outpatient surgical procedure that requires one to two weeks of downtime but produces great results.
